Learn from experienced scientists

icipe will hold a 5-day Science Paper Writing Workshop at the icipe Duduville Campus on August 1-5, 2016 as part of the programme to give postgraduate scholars and early career scientists the skills necessary for research, professional development and a successful career in science.

Training will be led by Dr Chris Beadle and Dr Peter Willadsen. Both were senior scientists at CSIRO, Australia, and have a wealth of experience in research, research leadership and capacity building, including training in science writing.

The aim of this workshop is to develop your scientific writing skills by working with you, a step at a time, through the process of writing a scientific manuscript from the very beginning. The workshop is aimed at the production of a manuscript suitable for submission to a scientific journal.

The workshop is very 'hand-on': approximately a third of the time is taken up with lecture material and discussion; for the rest of the time the trainers will work on a one-on-one basis with participants as they develop their papers. After the workshop the trainers will offer unlimited writing support to participants until their manuscript is accepted for publication.

To be eligible, participants must be ready to write a manuscript at the workshop. They must bring their data, results and analyses, key references and even draft figures. We also ask that participants not write any text in advance. Those who come with a draft manuscript they want to "fix up" will gain much less from the approach taken at the workshop.

This workshop is open to MSc and PhD students and and early career scientists. Since the workshop is so intensively one-on-one, the numbers will be limited to about 20. There is no workshop fee for accepted participants. For fellows from icipe Mbita, travel and accommodation expenses will be paid by CB&ID.
